Sclerotherapy Of Vulvar/Perineal Varicose Veins

In 2001, the foam sclerotherapy procedure for varicose veins was introduced to the United States European pioneers in this field. It has proved to be an effective method of treatment for varicose veins of different sizes at different locations. Vulvar and perineal varicose veins are common yet often neglected because women usually avoid talking about them and gynecologist cannot offer treatment. These dilated and unwanted veins affect one in four women and usually occur during and after pregnancy. This is due to abnormal pressure on lower pelvic veins and backflow of blood at high pressure into lower pelvic and vulvar veins. Symptoms usually include swelling in the vulva area with a feeling of pressure. This can also lead to leg varicose veins. Dr. Fattahi is the inventor of foam washout sclerotherapy which has drastically lowered risks of regular foam sclerotherapy.

Finding Relief

In extreme cases of vulvar and perineal varicosities not only patients have secondary varicose veins in legs, but they have pain during intercourse. Dr. Fattahi has found that foam sclerotherapy has helped provide long lasting relieve to this suffering. Dr. Fattahi has performed more than 60,000 therapy sessions for different vein problems.

The Procedure

Foam sclerotherapy is a modern treatment technique that involves injecting the veins with a foamed solution. Dr. Fattahi in most cases uses medical grade CO2 gas to make the foam injection safe, while many physicians still are using air to make the foam and as such inject air in the veins. After treatment, patients are fitted with a compressed stocking which must be worn for 2 to 10 days. All modern vein treatments are designed to be done at physician’s office and allow patients to resume routine activities on same day. Naturally experience and skills of the physician in evaluation and application of different treatment methods play a major role in securing satisfactory outcomes. Older surgical treatments are being phased out in treatment of varicose veins, provided the phlebologist has competency and vast experience in this field.

Spider veins are small, irregular, purplish or bluish unsightly vessels. Slightly larger and greenish veins, always feed spider veins. Achieving good results depends on treatment of spider and feeder veins.

Varicose veins always result from abnormal flow of blood in opposite the normal direction. In such cases, there is an incompetence of the one way barriers (valves) between the deep and superficial leg vein systems, leading to abnormal flow of blood from the larger deep veins into the superficial smaller veins and creation of bulging varicose veins that often have a zigzag pattern and cause a variety of symptoms.
